John D. Clapp

John D. Clapp is the director of the Higher Education Center for Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Violence Prevention. In addition to this role, he is currently a professor in the School of Social Work at San Diego State University, adjunct professor in the Graduate School of Public Health, and director of Center for Alcohol and Drug Studies at SDSU.

His research interests are in alcohol and other drug prevention and the evaluation of human service delivery systems and programs. Dr. Clapp has been awarded more than $16 million in research and evaluation grants and contracts from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism; the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control; University of California Tobacco-Related Disease Research Program; the county of San Diego; and the U.S. Department of Education. He has also been a consultant on alcohol and other drug prevention for numerous organizations, including the U.S. Marine Corps and the California Department of Alcohol and Drug Services.

With over a decade of experience as a researcher in the AOD field, he has published more than 65 journal articles and authored more than 75 conference papers. His work has appeared in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs; Addiction; Prevention Science; Drug and Alcohol Review; Drug and Alcohol Dependence, among numerous other top research journals.

He received a Ph.D. in Social Work from The Ohio State University, with a specialization in Health and Social Science Research Methodologies.
