EDC Wins Grant for Youth Alcohol Prevention Conference

(February, 2002) Education Development Center, Inc. (EDC) has received a $200,000 grant from The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to support an international conference on preventing alcohol use among young people. The conference will be held in Boston in March 2003.

"This grant is testimony to The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's commitment to improving the health of young people and families, as well as to EDC's record of success promoting health and

preventing alcohol and drug problems in communities around the world," said conference director Joel Epstein, who works within EDC's Health and Human Development Programs (HHD).

EDC was also the recipient of a recent $5 million grant from the Foundation for support of the Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention, a national resource center for universities on campus substance abuse and violence prevention, housed within HHD.

The latest grant will support the 13th Alcohol Policy conference series, historically a forum for researchers, community advocates, and public officials to exchange ideas, explore evidence-based solutions, and consider the application of non-partisan analysis and research findings to laws and policies aimed at minimizing risks associated with alcohol use.

Policy research presented at previous Alcohol Policy conferences has aided the development of numerous local, national, and international initiatives, including:

  • an increase in the minimum legal drinking age to 21 across the U.S.;
  • health warnings on alcoholic beverage containers;
    promotion of the Surgeon General's recommendations on preventing impaired driving;
  • decreases in the blood alcohol limit for impaired driving in certain states;
  • state excise tax increases on alcoholic beverages;
  • bans on certain alcohol marketing practices;
  • enforcement of underage drinking laws;
  • support for responsible sales and service practices; and
  • controls on alcohol availability at sporting events.

The conference will be held at the Royal Sonesta Boston Hotel, a prime location along the Charles River across from Boston's Beacon Hill.
