Publication Describes the Impact of a Regional HIV/AIDS Program in Asia

A new report from EDC HHD Asia, entitled “Stepping into the Future: An Impact Evaluation for the Deutsche Bank Project,” presents the results of an evaluation of a program designed to improve the lives of children and families affected by HIV/AIDS.

Established in 2004, the project builds the capacity of non-governmental organizations (NGO’s) to prevent HIV/AIDS, particularly among youth and ethnic minority groups, and mitigate the impact of this epidemic through care and support services for families in Southeast Asia.

The report identifies lessons learned, best practices, and innovative activities, and makes recommendations to enhance the relevance, efficiency, and efficacy of this and other HIV/AIDS prevention and intervention work.

Findings from this report reveal that the project has made a difference in improving the lives of children and families across this region:

  • In Lao, over 13,000 people from poor ethnic minority groups were reached through mobile mass-media campaigns, peer educators, and workshops.  48 peer educators and over 135 village heads from these villages were trained to disseminate basic HIV/AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) knowledge and prevention education.
  • In Vietnam, over 2,300 people were reached through training, workshops, celebrity talks, and other awareness-raising activities.  Results from one activity showed an increase of 45% in correct answers and a decline of 62% in “don’t know” answers to a survey measuring participants’ HIV/AIDS knowledge.
  • In Thailand, 160 AIDS orphans attended schools as a result of scholarships in high HIV infection areas of Northern Thailand and 85 peer educators were trained in HIV/AIDS prevention.
  • In Cambodia, over 1,300 children affected by HIV/AIDS benefited from counseling and support groups and 2400 attended day care centers.
  • In India, close to 2,000 children affected by HIV/AIDS who lived in poverty or were homeless continued their schooling or received non-formal education.
