Prevention Resources for Higher Education Professionals
During 2007, the U.S. Department of Education's Higher Education Center
for Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse and Violence Prevention, operated by
HHD, created four newsletters on important prevention topics for higher
education officials. Each of these issues of Catalyst highlight innovative
campus efforts related to alcohol and other drug abuse and violence (AODV)
prevention issues. Catalyst highlights innovative
campus efforts and each issue is devoted to an important aspect of campus
prevention:
- The Fall
2007 issue reports on campus policy development, implementation,
and enforcement, which are key components of an environmental
management approach to AODV prevention at colleges and universities. The
issue also includes several articles that describe campus-specific
policy development efforts and their effects.
- The Summer
2007 issue examines the latest research on coalitions and partnerships. It
includes descriptions of successful campus and community coalitions
and partnerships and articles on best practices related to developing
effective partnerships.
- The Spring
2007 issue explores the nature and extent of alcohol, other drug abuse,
and violence among populations that often receive less attention,
including community college students, African American and Latino
students, students with disabilities, and other underserved
groups. The issue features examples of several
campus prevention efforts that have successfully responded to
alcohol, drug, and violence problems among these underserved
groups.
- The Winter
2007 issue focuses on the role that law enforcement plays in effective
prevention. The issue provides specific examples
of ways to enlist the support and participation of law enforcement
in community-based prevention activities.
Catalyst is an online resource for campus senior administrators;
all campus AODV coordinators and other campus-based prevention professionals;
national organizations addressing campus AODV prevention issues;
program planners, faculty, and other staff, to assist in their efforts
to develop effective ways to prevent and reduce AODV problems.
