Our Topics
We are dedicated to making a difference in the health and well-being of people’s lives, focusing on health promotion and intervention on the most prevalent causes of morbidity and mortality. We address issues such as suicide; violence; unintentional injuries; mental health disorders; posttraumatic stress; alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs; HIV and sexually transmitted infections; reproductive health; and nutrition and fitness. Since many of these issues are interrelated, our projects frequently encompass more than one area.
Determinants of health, such as socioeconomic status and educational attainment, are inextricably linked to health and well-being, making some people more vulnerable to illness, injury, or death. An important part of our work is to better understand and minimize the causes and consequences of health disparities in the United States and in other regions of the world.
People everywhere strive to live long, healthy lives. This involves not only good health and caring relationships but also access to education, the ability to make a decent living, and participation in community life. Without these basic pillars of healthy human development, people’s opportunities and choices are limited.
