What HHD Does

MetroWest Youth Risk Behavior Survey

Techniques used: School census surveys; cross-sectional and trend analyses

This 10-year initiative provides communities in the MetroWest region of Boston, Massachusetts, with timely, local data on the health and risk behaviors of middle and high school students through biennial surveys. Developed and administered by HHD, the survey focuses on behaviors associated with the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the adolescent population, as well as related issues specified by MetroWest communities—violence and injuries; tobacco, alcohol, and other substance use; mental health; nutrition and exercise; sexual behaviors; and protective factors.

Districts can customize their surveys by choosing additional questions to address local concerns. Spanish and Portuguese translations are also available.

During the most recent survey wave, almost 32,000 students completed surveys, with approximately 90 percent participation rates. Subsequent surveys will be used to monitor trends, identify priorities for new health programs, and measure progress.

Reach and Impact

A 10-year initiative provides communities in the MetroWest region of Boston, Massachusetts with timely, local data on the health and risk behaviors of middle and high school students through biennial surveys. In the fall of 2008, almost 32,000 students in 22 school districts completed surveys, with an overall participation rate of approximately 90 percent. Survey results are used by communities to develop programs and policies, enhance curricula, and set priorities for improving the health of young people.
