Africa
We have been working in Africa since 1995. Our initial efforts were aimed at responding to the HIV pandemic in southern Africa. Now, however, we have expanded our focus and reach. In addition to HIV and AIDS education, our work extends to promoting school health, educating all children, and strengthening the capacity of local agencies to prevent and reduce cancer throughout sub-Saharan Africa.
HHD staff provide training, curriculum development, monitoring and evaluation, and technical assistance to governments and non-governmental organizations working in education and health, which primarily include ministries of education and teachers unions.
Our staff pride themselves on their ability to translate research into policy and practice in a wide variety of contexts. In sub-Saharan Africa, our approach is to synthesize evidence and promising practices, and then work with local partners to develop interventions and materials that will improve the human condition.
Over the years our efforts have yielded impressive results: a national HIV prevention curriculum in Botswana; training and materials on HIV and AIDS for teachers unions throughout sub-Saharan Africa; a successful inter-ministerial partnership for school health in Nigeria; and an innovative computer learning and health services program for rural South African schools.
