About HHD's work in the Caribbean

HIV Advocacy and Leadership Campaign

To address HIV and AIDS within the education sector and combat stigma around the disease, HHD created an advocacy and leadership campaign with Caribbean partner organizations in 2005. We trained 36 leader-advocates from multiple sectors to use their influence and expertise to persuade the education sector to strengthen its response to HIV and AIDS by adopting a comprehensive approach.

HHD also provided a forum for these advocates to meet with senior-level administrators, primarily from the ministries of education in Caribbean countries. With support from the UNESCO Kingston Cluster Office for the Caribbean and OECS, this campaign helped to reduce stigma among key influentials and encouraged ministers to discuss the need for a comprehensive approach to health promotion to mitigate the impact of the AIDS epidemic.

Reach and Impact

An evaluation of the Advocacy and Leadership Campaign found that one of the greatest effects of the campaign was the change in participants’ attitudes toward people who are HIV-positive.
