Skills-Based Health Curriculum
Health and Family Life Education (HFLE) is a comprehensive skills-based curriculum to improve the long-term health of Caribbean children and youth. HHD provided training on interactive teaching methods and alternative student assessments for teachers and HFLE coordinators.
In 2003, HHD assisted with the creation of the first Regional HFLE Curriculum Framework, to guide countries in developing or upgrading their national HFLE curricula to strengthen the skills-based components. It provides consistent standards and guidance for learning outcomes, together with sample activities.
Developing the Framework was a collaborative effort involving UNICEF; ministries of education; the Organization of Caribbean States (OECS); the University of the West Indies; national governments; and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and other UN agencies, including the Pan-American Health Organization and UNESCO.
Following the development of the Framework, UNICEF contracted HHD to conduct a four-year study to evaluate the implementation of a common curriculum in four countries; results are forthcoming.
